Quick answer
Yes—a PS5 with a compatible disc drive can play movie Blu-rays, including standard Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray (the 4K disc format), as well as DVDs. Insert a supported disc and open Disc Player from the PS5 media home. PlayStation documents that route in its current disc-playback guide.
The condition is the drive. A PS5 Digital Edition from the original CFI-1000 model group cannot use physical discs. A CFI-2000 Digital Edition or CFI-7000-group console can use PlayStation’s separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series add-on drive; check the exact console model before buying one. This is not a claim that a generic USB computer Blu-ray drive will work on a PS5.
This guide is for physical movie discs on a PS5, not Blu-ray files copied to USB storage, streaming apps, games, or choosing a new dedicated player. If you are deciding whether to buy a separate box, use our 4K Blu-ray player buying guide instead.
Step 1: identify your PS5 and disc drive
| What you own | Physical movie discs? | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 with a built-in disc slot | Yes, for supported disc formats | Go to the disc and playback steps below |
| Original PS5 Digital Edition, CFI-1000 model group | No | Do not buy a CFI-ZDD1 drive for this model; use a different compatible player for discs |
| CFI-2000 Digital Edition without its add-on drive | Not yet | Confirm the model, then consult PlayStation’s CFI-ZDD1 setup guide |
| CFI-7000-group console without its add-on drive | Not yet | Confirm the model, then consult PlayStation’s CFI-ZDD1 setup guide |
PlayStation’s supported-format page names those model groups explicitly. Check the model number on your own console and the product listing in your region; the marketing name “Digital Edition” alone does not tell you whether the optional drive can be attached.
If you need the add-on drive, follow PlayStation’s installation instructions for CFI-2000/7000 models. PlayStation says an internet connection is required to pair the drive with the console during setup. Complete that pairing before using the steps below. The statement about first-time drive pairing does not mean that every later movie needs a network connection.
Step 2: check the label on the disc
The movie’s packaging matters more than whether it says “4K” in an online listing. Match the actual physical disc to PlayStation’s format list.
| Disc in your hand | PS5 disc-player support |
|---|---|
| Ultra HD Blu-ray movie | Listed as supported on a PS5 with a compatible drive |
| Standard Blu-ray movie, such as a BD-ROM | Listed as supported |
| DVD movie | Listed as supported |
| CD | Not supported |
| BD-RE version 1.0 or BD-R/RE XL | Not supported |
| DVD that has not been finalized | Not supported |
PlayStation also lists particular BD-R/RE and recordable-DVD formats, but that is not a promise that every home-recorded disc or copied video will play. Consult the full official list for the recording format and mode. It warns against inserting 8 cm, non-circular, cracked, deformed, repaired, or sticker-labeled discs because they may damage the console.
An ordinary 4K video file is a different task: PlayStation routes USB video through Media Gallery, not Disc Player. Do not use USB-file playback as a test of Ultra HD Blu-ray movie support.
Step 3: insert the movie and start playback
- Connect the PS5 to the display you intend to watch and select that display’s PS5 input. If you use a soundbar or receiver, note whether the PS5 connects to the display directly or passes through the audio device; that distinction helps if picture or sound fails.
- If your model needed an add-on drive, make sure its official setup and first-time pairing are complete.
- Insert a supported Blu-ray or DVD into the PS5 disc slot. Do not force the disc if the slot does not accept it.
- Go to the media home and select Disc Player when it appears. Follow the disc’s own menu to start the movie, choose a language, or turn on subtitles where offered.
Those are the media-disc steps PlayStation publishes. They do not require a separate Windows or Mac Blu-ray player app. The film’s menu and available tracks depend on the disc; the presence of a menu option is not guaranteed by the console’s format list.
For an Ultra HD Blu-ray, use a 4K-capable display if you want to see a 4K output. If a disc plays but the picture is blank, avoid concluding that the disc is unsupported from that symptom alone: the selected input, HDMI path, display, or receiver may be involved. Our Blu-ray won’t play diagnostic separates disc recognition from a video-path failure.
If Disc Player does not appear or the disc will not read
Start with reversible checks. PlayStation’s PS5 disc-issue guide recommends checking the insertion direction, wiping dirt or fingerprints with a soft clean cloth, and trying another game, Blu-ray, or DVD. The official guide illustrates label orientation for a vertically positioned console; use that illustration for your setup rather than guessing from another console’s orientation.
Record what happens with two known-compatible discs. If neither disc appears, the drive, setup, or console needs attention; verify an add-on drive’s pairing and use PlayStation support if the safe checks fail. If only one disc fails, inspect that disc’s format and surface, then test it in another compatible player if one is available. One result does not prove which component is defective.
Stop before destructive troubleshooting. The same PlayStation support page also describes a reset that deletes information on the console. It is not a routine first step for watching a film, and this guide does not ask you to perform it. Do not open the console, force a stuck disc, modify firmware, or buy a replacement drive on the basis of one unreadable movie.
If the movie starts but has no sound, follow the Blu-ray audio guide. If it freezes after playback has begun, note whether it happens at the same point and whether other supported discs behave the same way; then use PlayStation support for your model. Those are different problems from a missing Disc Player tile.
What this guide has and has not verified
This is a research-based setup guide, using PlayStation’s English support pages checked on September 24, 2026. We have not tested a PS5, add-on drive, display, disc collection, picture quality, drive noise, or playback reliability. Compatibility of one particular movie still needs a check on your own hardware. The next purchase should follow a specific unmet requirement, not the assumption that all PS5s are identical.
